As spring settles into summer here in Michigan, the world feels fully awake again, finally! The gray heaviness of winter has lifted, trees are thick with leaves, flowers are blooming, and the evenings stay golden just a little longer. Everywhere you look, life seems to be moving, blooming, becoming.
And honestly? After a long Michigan winter, it feels well deserved!
There’s something about this time of year that makes us want to hurry outside and soak up every second of warmth. Windows open. Bare feet in the grass. The first bonfire. Breaking out the camping equipment. Gardens finally showing off after months of waiting beneath frozen ground.
But like every season, spring moving into summer has its own purpose beyond simply being beautiful.
Spring is a season of awakening, it’s a season of growth that was quietly forming long before we could see it. Seeds buried deep beneath the soil weren’t dead during winter—they were preparing. Roots were strengthening underground long before blossoms appeared. Summer reminds us what happens when growth is nurtured consistently. What once looked barren becomes vibrant and alive.
I think life moves in seasons like that too.
Sometimes we don’t realize until later that growth was happening underneath the surface all along. Healing can look invisible before it becomes visible. Change often begins quietly, deep in the roots, before it ever reaches the branches.
I’ve spent seasons of my life impatient for the next chapter—wanting clarity faster, healing quicker, answers sooner.
But the older I get, the more I’m learning not to rush the process.
Because spring teaches us that things take time to bloom.
And summer reminds us to enjoy what we once prayed would grow.
There’s beauty in becoming.
Beauty in slow growth.
Beauty in finally feeling the warmth after a long cold season.
Perhaps that’s the reminder this season offers us:
Just because growth isn’t immediate doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
Some of the most important work in our lives begins quietly, beneath the surface, long before anyone else can see it
